National Children’s Hospital for Wales, Heath Hospital Heath Cardiff

Commencement: May 2004.
Completion: September 2004.

This project consisted of flooring for 4 floors (ground, first, second and third floor levels) of the National Children's Hospital for Wales. All the ward areas (including corridors, circulation areas, lift lobbies and stairs) were installed in Polyflor XL PU, with the exception of the wet areas (where we used anti slip flooring) and the office, dining and LATCH areas (which received various carpet finishes).

Polyflor XL PU (24 shades)
This is a hardwearing vinyl sheet and tile flooring with marbleised decoration. This heavy-duty flooring has a Polyurethane surface treatment and comes in 24 brilliant, brand-new colours.

Each floor was laid in 2 differing colours of Polyflor XL PU (i.e. 8 colours were used, with an additional colour for staircase work).

Each floor level was laid in a mainfield colour (the majority colourway), then in corridors, circulation areas, reception areas and the like, hand cut design work was laid in a contrasting colourway as follows:

  Mainfield Colourway Design Work

Ground Floor Zircon Blue 3760 Flowline “Swirls” Sedona 3860 - all hand cut
First Floor Ruby 3840 Flowline “Woven” Citrine 3930 - all hand cut
Second Floor Tanzanite 3750 Flowline Clouds Carnelian 3890 - all hand cut
Third Floor Flint Flowline Planets Ironstone 3850 - waterjet cutting at the factory

Together with the hand cutting of the swirl, woven and cloud designs on site, all floors including the lift car floor have designs which were aqua jet cut at the factory. These include:

Lift car floor - a circular design in 4 colours representing a “target” (diameter 1m)
Ground floor - a circular design in 5 colours representing the “sea” (diameter 2m)
First floor - a circular design in 5 colours representing the “land” (diameter 2m)
Second floor - a circular design in 5 colours representing the “sky” (diameter 2m)
Third floor - a circular design in 5 colours representing “space” (diameter 2m)

The Third floor has also been installed with approximately 15 circular designs representing the “planets”.

The Ground Floor Play area contained within the reception has a “jelly bean” shaped, Aqua cut motif containing 7 colours forming various geometric patterns.

Within the reception entrance lobby area, an aqua cut circular motif approximately 7.50m in diameter was laid, in 8 colourways. This large, impressive motif represents a “Fish Tank” and is designed with a swirl of SEDONA PINK that leads to the entrance of the Ground floor ward. This complements the aquarium sited in the reception area.

All of our experienced floor layers demonstrated their skill at the hand cutting of ‘swirls’ etc, together with their expertise at thermo hot welding, as all of the designs, including the aqua cut ones, were welded upon completion.

All of the wet areas were laid in Altro VM20 Walkway anti slip safety flooring. Each floor was laid in a differing colour although it is complementary to the colour of the Polyflor XL PU in the main areas.

Ground Floor – Blue 412
First Floor – Cerise 906
Second Floor – Blue Waterfall 912
Third floor – Rosa 909

The carpeting to the main office areas throughout the building has been installed with Joseph Hamilton & Seaton Ltd “Hospicare” in 524 Teal Green.

On the third floor level are the LATCH areas, where 8 ensuite bedrooms are sited. Again a Joseph Hamilton & Seaton Ltd carpet was used, this time in Whittington Twist, laid in 3 colourways (Capri Blue, Sherwood and Damson). The carpeting to these bedrooms was laid on a “double-stick” underlay system. To complement this area, the corridor to the latch areas was laid in JHS “Matrix” in Orange 321.

Finally, to complete the project, a small amount of Interface carpet tiles (Universe) and entrance matting were also used.
